Europe’s Largest Telecommunications Giant, Deutsche Telekom, Makes a Revolutionary Move with Bitcoin
Deutsche Telekom, the largest telecommunications company in Europe, has made waves in the cryptocurrency world with its recent announcement. At the BTC Prague conference, Dirk Röder, head of Web3 infrastructure and solutions at T-Systems MMS, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, revealed the company’s plans to delve into Bitcoin mining.
This marks a significant step in Deutsche Telekom’s expansion into the cryptocurrency and blockchain space. Röder disclosed that the company has been running a Bitcoin node along with Bitcoin Lightning nodes since 2023, and now they are set to enter the realm of Bitcoin mining. Describing it as ‘digital monetary photosynthesis’, Röder confirmed in response to a question from Bitcoin influencer Joe Nakamoto that T-Mobile would indeed be mining Bitcoin.
But Deutsche Telekom’s involvement in the crypto sector doesn’t stop there. The company is active in various blockchain networks, including Polkadot, Flow, and Celo. In 2022, Deutsche Telekom showed its support for Ethereum by running validator nodes and collaborating with the liquid staking protocol StakeWise, as well as participating in the governance DAO.
Furthermore, Deutsche Telekom has formed partnerships with several blockchain firms, such as operating a verification node for Polygon and backing the Q and Chainlink blockchain networks.
This move by Deutsche Telekom signals a significant shift in the traditional telecommunications industry towards embracing the potential of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology.
