US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made a bold promise in his campaign, stating that if elected, he will pardon Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the controversial e-commerce platform Silk Road. Silk Road was known for trading Bitcoin, and when the platform collapsed, a significant amount of BTC ended up in the hands of the US government.
Kennedy took to the social media platform X to make this announcement, arguing that the two life sentences Ulbricht received were excessively harsh. “Ross Ulbricht has been in prison for too long. If I am elected, I will pardon him,” Kennedy stated. He also urged his followers to sign a petition calling for Ulbricht’s release.
Interestingly, Kennedy’s stance aligns with former President Donald Trump, who is also running for the 2024 presidency. During the Libertarian National Convention in Washington, D.C. in May, Trump pledged to commute Ulbricht’s sentence on his first day in office if re-elected.
Both Kennedy and Trump have positioned themselves as pro-cryptocurrency candidates, vowing to protect Bitcoin from what they perceive as President Joe Biden’s anti-crypto policies. Kennedy particularly views Bitcoin as a safeguard against inflation and a vital tool for ensuring transaction freedom.
This support for Ulbricht’s release and their pro-crypto stance sharply contrasts with the current administration’s approach. Both Kennedy and Trump have voiced their opposition to the creation of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
Ulbricht, who has already served 11 years in prison, expressed gratitude for Trump’s earlier promise and expressed hope for a “second chance” with the help of his supporters.
As the 2024 presidential race intensifies, the fate of Ross Ulbricht and the future of cryptocurrency policies in the United States remain significant topics that could heavily influence voter decisions.
